On 2 March 1971 a flag stitched inside these walls was hoisted for the first time in front of the Arts Building.

In the first days of March 1971, as the non-cooperation movement spread, student leaders prepared a flag in this hall: green, with a red disc carrying the map of the country in gold.

On 2 March 1971 they carried it out and hoisted it in front of the Arts Building of the University of Dhaka. It was the first time the flag of Bangladesh was raised in public.

The historic Joy Bangla Force was formed in this hall in the same period, and the hall became one of the centres from which the movement was directed. Three weeks later, on the night of 25 March, it was among the first places the Pakistani military attacked; students, staff and neighbouring families were killed on these grounds.

The association marks both dates every year. Details are on the Events page.
