Born 9 February 1935, shot in custody on 15 February 1969 — the man whose name this hall carries.
Zahurul Huq was born on 9 February 1935 and served as a sergeant in the Pakistan Air Force. In 1968 he was named among the thirty-five accused in what the government called the Agartala Conspiracy Case; he was accused number 17.
On the morning of 15 February 1969 he was shot at point-blank range at the door of his cell. He was taken to the Combined Military Hospital in Dhaka and died there that night.
The killing turned an already restless movement into an uprising. Government buildings were set alight, parts of the case record were destroyed, and on 22 February 1969 the government withdrew the case altogether.
Students of Iqbal Hall — as this hall was then called — renamed it for him almost immediately. The University of Dhaka adopted the name officially after independence in 1972 and amended it to its present form, Shahid Sergeant Zahurul Huq Hall, in 2013. The Government of Bangladesh conferred the Independence Award on him in 2018, and a Bangladesh Air Force base carries his name.
